Draw!

Draw is an event brought together by Edmonton’s artist run centers. There were several different stations with activities to stimulate drawing. At Latitude 53, Lindsay MacDonald, Sarah Fuller and I made some esquisite corpses. I also made a unicorn with special horn powers and laser eyes.

Later that night, FAVA hosted a scratch animation session. There were two kinds, one where you scratch off the black on exposed processed film and one where you could draw on unexposed processed film. This is ink applied directly to clear film, allowed to dry then cut into a loop and run through a projector.

Pumpjack at Compression Camp

Compression Camp is an event put on by EMMEDIA. The goal is to make a video in a compressed amount of time.

Pumpjack examines the prairie icon by concentrating on the characteristic nodding motion of a pumpjack. Pumpjack is a meditative deconstruction of the rhythmic movement of the machine, that pulls liquids out of the earth.

Pumpjacks are symbols of the oil and gas industry that is alternatively vilified or acclaimed. They convert a rotary movement into a vertical reciprocating motion to drive the pump shaft, and pull oil or gas out of the ground. They dot the countryside and mark the location of a producing well. But they are in decline in the landscape, as newer, more improved technology replaces this dinosaur. This video examines the Pumpjack with as little political comment as possible, concentrating more on the movement and the components of this easily recognized machine.

When did this happen? May 9-14 2011 in Calgary Alberta.

Handheld has grown from a newsletter into Alberta’s first dedicated media arts magazine. It is distributed nationally and twice annually to members, arts organizations, institutions and interested individuals. The magazine keeps Calgary’s media arts community informed about events, activities and contemporary theory, ideas, and social arts activism. It provides a forum for the discussion of current issues and concerns, and a venue for relating information about workshops, equipment and policy changes within EMMEDIA.

Handheld is also posted in PDF format as an online resource on the EMMEDIA website. This increases the reach of our publication where otherwise international mailing costs would prove prohibitive.

Handheld responds to members’ needs to share insights, ideas and information. Circulation is currently 350. Contributing writers to the magazine are paid, and provide essays and reviews, which further stimulate discussion and a sense of community. Our goal is to increase our editorial rigor to ensure Handheld maintains its critical value and continues to move forward as a print resource for artists and the community.

Art’s Birthday 2011 Recap

This is a quick recap of the party. There was all that is listed below, plus cake! And balloons!

Drawing Robots!

People at the party created various kinds of drawing robots that  worked away through the night to create some great drawings. And some people decided to draw robots!

Presentations!

Because I was helping people make robots I missed most of the lectures and presentations happening in the screening room, but they sounded fun. I did get a few glimpses of the ACAD students doing *something* with papers and yelling. I did get to see Carl and Josh and Grant doing *something* with a keyboard, cameras and the projector and I did see Paul Woodrow briefly as he was giving his lecture. So much going on!

Tea!

I did get a chance to have some tea with Shelley Ouellet. You needed to bring some tarts to get tea and I (like almost everyone else) brought butter tarts. At least mine had a bit of coconut in them to be a bit different. Vicki had some great lemon and raspberry tarts. Yum! The tea was fantastic. It was a nice place to come and hang out and chat.

Animation!

I made a crappy animation using those markers that change colour. I coloured with the blank one, then coloured on top and my drawing was slowly exposed by the scribbles. Overall, it did not work as well as I’d hoped since the lines were blurred, but fun all the same.
